A representative of each House in the Chapter meets with the others on a monthly basis, to exchange information, to seek resolution of problems in a particular House, and to express that Chapter’s vote on larger issues. What sets Oxford Houses apart from traditional sober living homes is their democratic model, where residents actively participate in decision-making processes, fostering a sense of accountability and community. Unlike many traditional sober living homes, Oxford Houses do not have a staff presence or formal treatment programs; instead, they rely on residents to manage the house and support one another. There is no reason to believe that society as a whole had the responsibility to provide long-term housing within a protected environment for the alcoholic and drug addict. However, there is every reason to believe that recovering alcoholics and drug addicts can do for themselves that which society as a whole has no responsibility to do for them. Oxford House is built on the premise of expanding in order to meet the needs of recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.

Resident Training

While the average duration of stay is just over a year, many residents choose to remain for three, four, or even more years. Importantly, there is no pressure for those in good standing to leave, allowing them to focus on their recovery at their own pace. The Oxford House model requires that the property be suitable for creating a supportive living environment for individuals in recovery. Potential properties must meet specific criteria, including being located in safe, residential neighborhoods and having enough space to accommodate multiple residents. In fact, Oxford House creates an environment whereby each member can more fully realize the benefits available from active AA or NA membership. A recovering individual can live in an Oxford House for as long as he or she does not drink alcohol, does not use drugs, and pays an equal share of the house expenses.

Can Women and Men Stay in the Same Oxford House?

There are six house officers in each Oxford House, elected by the members to support the operations of the house. House members determine how they want to run their household, including which new members they will invite to move in and how to manage their finances. Experience has shown that Oxford Houses work for both men and women, marijuana addiction but not in the same house.

• These houses provide a structured, alcohol- and drug-free environment for individuals in recovery, emphasizing peer support and shared responsibility among residents.
• There are over 3500 self-sustaining Oxford Houses in the United States and more than 24,000 individuals in recovery living in these houses at any one time during the year.
• The application is then considered by the membership of the House and if 80% of the members approve, the applicant is accepted and moves in.
• The house members will invite applicants to the house for an interview where they will ask questions and then decide as a group who they will vote into the house as a new member.

Call the house you are interested in directly to find out about vacancies, or be put on a waiting list. Arrange for an interview with the current House members, who will vote on your acceptance. Rents vary according to the size and location of the House, ranging from $95 to $110 per week, which covers all household expenses except food. There is no official minimum time limit for acceptance, but generally an individual comes into an Oxford House following a 14 to 28 day rehabilitation program, or at least a detoxification period. Equal Expense Shared (EES) is generally between 80 and 160 dollars a week and includes utilities. Weekly business meetings are mandatory to discuss any issues that the house may be facing.

However, an Oxford House relies primarily upon example for assuring a high percentage of AA and/or NA attendance from its members. As a general rule formal AA or NA meetings are not held in an Oxford House member who has maintained comfortable sobriety in an Oxford House makes it a practice to attend a lot of AA and/or NA meetings on a regular basis. Oxford House, Inc. is a separate nonprofit organization that employs field staff to provide technical assistance to the network of houses to help expand the Oxford House Model. The Model encourages the development of leadership skills and self-efficacy.

This principle contrasts sharply with the principle of providing marijuana addiction the alcoholic or drug addict with assistance for a limited time period in order to make room for a more recently recovering alcoholic or drug addict. Residents benefit from the shared experiences of others who understand the challenges of recovery, which fosters accountability and motivation. Also, Oxford House residents demonstrated higher employment rates and lower instances of illegal activities, further highlighting the effectiveness of this model in promoting recovery and reintegration into society.

Oxford House – Hanabrook Park

It has been the experience of Oxford House that participation in AA and NA is extremely high in an environment where one individual can see another individual, with the same disease, reaping great benefits from AA and/or NA participation. The World Council is made up of both alumni and residents of Oxford Houses who are elected by their peers. Electing members to staggered three-year terms of office assures continuity of the 12-member World Council. This assures integrity and correct application of the Oxford House system of operations as documented in the Oxford House Manual© and Oxford House Chapter Manual©. The OHI field staff travel to Oxford Houses, Chapters, and Associations to provide technical assistance and training, assist with expansion, and network in the community.

Each individual recovers from alcoholism or drug addiction at a different pace. All too often, an abrupt transition from a protected environment to an environment which places considerable glamour on the use of alcohol and drugs causes a return to alcoholic drinking or addictive drug use. The Oxford House concept is to sustain self-run and self-supported recovery homes for men and women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. An Oxford House is a sober house democratically run and financially supported by its residents alone.

It was the first step in a nationwide movement, now almost 50 years old, that has been credited with helping thousands of people overcome addiction and lead productive lives. Instead of being left to their own fates, Mr. Molloy and other residents decided to take over the house themselves, paying the expenses and utilities, cooking the meals and keeping watch over one another’s path to recovery. Each member pays EES (Equal Expense Share) which includes the total amount of rent due for the month as well as the cost of utilities, telephone, cable TV and any other expenses that the house includes in its common expenditures. Some houses collect EES from its members on a monthly basis while many houses choose to collect EES on a weekly basis. This monthly or weekly amount varies from state to state and house to house and can range anywhere from $125 a week to $250 a week.
